There could be several reason for a candidate being late for an interview, ranging from a genuine delay right down to having a lack of enthusiasm for the role. Try and get to the bottom of the candidates reason by judging their response to questions about why they are late.
2. Uncertainty in a candidate’s answers
If a candidate regularly answers with ‘maybe’ and ‘pretty sure’ when asked about specific skillset they have or industries they’ve worked in, alarm bells should start ringing. A much better response would be to admit that they don’t have the specific experience whilst giving examples of how they have learnt new skills easily in previous roles.
3. The classic weakness as a strength
A very common answer when asked about a weakness involves the candidate taking a strength (such as attention to detail) and dressing it up as a weakness. ‘I have too much attention to detail’. This shows a lack of honesty, with exceptional candidates being willing to provide a real weakness whilst illustrating a desire to learn and overcome their challenges.
4. Talking negatively about the current or previous employer
If an employee hates their boss, an interview is not a good time to talk about it. Whilst they may have genuine grievances with them, it’s almost always a two sided story. If a candidate is willing to openly talk about their confrontations during an interview, it’s possible that the candidate finds it difficult to deal with these types of situations - not an ideal trait in an employee.
